We Performed Breast Cancer Awareness Event 2014.

Kordon Rotaract Club and Medbar performed a breast cancer awareness study at Breast Cancer Awareness Event that took place in Izmir Culture Park sponsored by Medbar. On 24 October Sunday morning people meet at 26 Ağustos Gate. With guests from Memeder, Breast Health Association, we emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, hand examination was described and prepared leaflets were distributed.

According to datum of Cancer Department of Public Health Agency of Turkey, Breast cancer is the number one cancer among women in Turkey and in one out of every 8 women has the risk of getting cancer. So what are the risk factors?

First birth age:
In first birth after age 30, the risk is increased compared to first birth before age 18.

Firs menstruation age:
Who has first menstruation in early age, risk is increased because they will be exposed to estrogen longer lifetime.

Menopause age: 
Advanced age (> 55 years) menopause, due to exposure to estrogen supply longer, increases the risk of breast cancer.

Breast-feeding:
As the data indicating that the protective effect of at least for one year breastfeeding exist, studies claiming to have any impact are also available.

Birth control pills:
Long-term use of birth control pills increases the risk of breast cancer development. In addition, the use of these drugs for at least five years has been shown to reduce the risk of colon, uterus, and ovaries (ovarian) cancer.

Hormonal therapy after menopause:

Such drugs are often used for the elimination or reduction of symptoms due to menopause. These drugs include estrogen and progesterone hormones that body stopped producing. In postmenopausal women using these drugs for 5 years and longer, increases the risk of breast cancer and uterine cancer.

Height and weight:
In tall women, with extremely weak women in premenopausal women, women above the ideal weight after menopause the breast cancer risk increases. Postmenopausal overweight, especially adipose tissue (known to cause breast cancer) causes excessive estrogen hormone production.

Nutrition:
In postmenopausal period, there is a connection between the development of breast cancer with high fat ratio nutrition food. Otherwise, there is a protective effect of vegetable predominantly nutrition.

Alcohol:

More than 1 glass of alcohol (1 beer, 1 glass of wine, 1 double hard drinks) consumption in a day increases the level of estrogen in women so may increase the risk of developing cancer.

To have a family history of breast cancer:
In women whose mother, the maternal relatives, aunts and / or sister has breast cancer, the risk of developing breast cancer is higher than the normal population.

Breast Cancer Symptoms and Diagnosis

First signs:

Withdrawal of the nipple, spontaneous bloody discharge from the nipple
Skin redness on one breast, thickening
A portion of the skin on the breast that can be attracted toward or mass and which may be detected under the arm pit.
Irregular, hard, mostly single and painless mass which can be distinguished from the surrounding tissue

Precautions

Every healthy woman should begin monthly self breast examination from the age of 20.

Between 20-40 years of age; Self breast examination monthly, clinical breast examination in every two years.

Between 40-49 years of age; Self breast examination monthly, clinical breast examination every year, mammography in every two years if first-degree relatives have breast cancer.

Between 50-69 years of age; Self breast examination monthly, clinical breast examination every year, mammography in every two years.

 

A personal calendar must be obtained to note the doctor appointments, self-examination dates and mammograpies.

 

"Healthy Habits" must be earned and maintained as low-fat eating, regular exercise, to avoid smoking and alcohol.
